TORONTO URBAN ECOVILLAGE PROJECT
PROJECT DIRECTORS: MIKE KENNY AND AFEEFA KARIM
LOCATION: Toronto, Ontario, Canada
TARGET: An urban ecovillage to be located as close to downtown as possible or within a reasonable distance to avoid the high cost of downtown property sales.
NUMBER OF HOMES: To be determined ; Mixed Use ; apartments/lofts, townhomes ; Commercial space ; Cooperative Space ; Office space ; Warehouse space.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: We are group of citizens made up of working professionals, recent graduates, green entrepreneurs and students that came together one day and decided that we wanted a lifestyle that offered more than mainsteam housing. We want a community. We want the ability to sustain oureslves while living in an ecologically sound way that does not cause further damage to our ecosystem or compromise our health and well being.
Our building(s) will either be retrofitted or designed to be energy efficient employing a variety of creative meausres and instrumentation of sustainable design.
The project will provide us with the means to reduce our ecological footprint, reduce our consumption and reduce teh high cost of living expenses.
Our building(s) will be designed to foster a sense of community, to enable a calmer pace of life and to enable our residents to live and eat healthier by building and maintaining an organic vegetable, fruit and herb garden.
Our community will be designed so as to assist and further enable activists and activist organizations that are already making a difference in our community, our city and in the wider world, to further their progress.
We hope this project will redefine cohousing and ecovillages with its well thought out design and be a model for future cohousing developments.
In the distant future, we would also like to open a rural location.
New members are always encouraged. This will be your community as much as ours. Please join us at one of our next meetings:
